California CSLB License Renewals: Workers’ Compensation Classification Codes Now Required
California Contractors – Important Update to License Renewals: Workers’ Compensation Classification Codes Required
Effective July 1, 2024, Business and Professions Code Section 7125.6 mandates that contractors holding a certificate of workers’ compensation insurance on file with the CSLB (Contractors State License Board) must include the three classification codes corresponding to the highest estimated payroll reported on their workers’ compensation insurance policy when submitting their license renewal forms.
Renewal Instructions
Workers’ compensation classification codes may appear differently depending on your policy. Follow these guidelines to ensure your renewal is processed:
- If your policy includes fewer than three classification codes, provide all classification codes listed on the policy.
- If you’re unsure of your codes or face difficulties with the CSLB’s online renewal portal, consider the following:
- Review your policy for a suffix that includes the four-digit class code.
- Contact your insurance broker for assistance with identifying your classification codes.
- Use the Classification Search tool on the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) website to match your classification description to the appropriate code.
Code Verification
- If your classification codes match WCIRB data, they will be listed along with classification descriptions.
- If your codes do not match WCIRB class codes, enter the numbers provided by your insurance company or broker. The CSLB system accepts codes that are 4 to 6 digits long.
- For non-WCIRB class codes, CSLB will identify the insurance provider, allowing the public to contact them for classification code descriptions.
Key Compliance Notes
- Your license renewal cannot be processed without at least one valid 4- to 6-digit classification code.
- If your renewal is delayed due to missing class codes, the statute allows for retroactive renewal if you provide the required codes within 30 days of receiving notification from CSLB.
